Maintaining Your Stand By Faith

By Tokunbo Adejuwon

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Hebrews 10:38

The only fight the believer is called to fight is the fight of faith, and the Bible calls it a good fight. God’s Word tells us to fight the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:12). The reason it’s a good fight is because we always triumph through Christ (2 Corinthians 2:14 )and we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us (Romans 8:37).

We are not trying to fight sin. Jesus already put sin away by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26). Jesus conquered sin for us through the finished work of redemption (Romans 8:3-4). We can live right today as believers by walking in the light of the life of God that is in our recreated spirits. Similarly, God didn’t tell the believer to fight the devil. Yes, Satan is our adversary (1 Peter 5:8,9) and we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12). However, we are not fighting to defeat the devil. Jesus already defeated him and brought him to nought. And Jesus did it as our Substitute; He did it in our stead. Colossians 2:15 says “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” We already have victory over the devil and by faith in God’s Word, we exercise our authority over him and walk in absolute dominion over Satan, his cohorts and all the forces of hell.

The Bible states clearly that the believer is to live by faith. This life of faith is such a wonderful life- one that brings glory and pleasure to God (Hebrews 11:6) as well as blessings to humanity. One thing we need to learn however,  is how to tenaciously hold fast our confession of faith and refuse to draw back in the face of tests, trials and contradictory circumstances. We live in a world where the devil is god and he always seeks to put pressure on us on all sides.

It’s through faith and patience that we take hold of the things that belong to us in Christ (Hebrews 6:12). Patience here doesn’t mean passively waiting for something to happen. It means persistence and consistency in believing and speaking in line with God’s Word.

Hebrews 10:35 tells us not to cast away our confidence for it has great recompense of reward. We have need of patience- persistence, that after we have done the will of God, we might receive

the promises. We need to develop staying power, stick-to-it-iveness. We need to learn endurance and consistency in our walk with God.

Hebrews 10:23 is written in this same context and it tells us to hold fast our confession of faith without wavering. Our faith is measured by our confession. Our usefulness to the Lord’s work is measured by our confession. Confession is affirming what we believe, it is testifying to what we know. And witnessing for the truths we have embraced. The confession of our lips, borne out of faith in our heart will absolutely defeat the devil in every circumstance. (Revelation 12:11). There is a confession of our hearts and a confession of our lips; when both align and agree with God’s Word, we become mighty in faith and prayer. Our confessions dominate us. They rule us. The devil knows that our continual confession of the Word is his defeat. So Satan does his best to steal our confession from our lips. That’s why the Bible tells us to hold fast to it. Faith’s confessions create realities.

We should not draw back from the faith life to living by our senses. Yes, the tests and trials may come. Extreme persecution may come. But our Father loves us dearly and He’s able to put us over the tests. And the good news is that He actually will- as we stand our ground on His Word in simple faith. On the grounds of the finished work of redemption, based on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, we have been blessed with all that God has (Ephesians 1:3, Colossians 1:12-14, 1 Corinthians 3:21, Ephesians 1:11). Whatever it is that we need or want, we can appropriate it by acting on the Word.

There’s a world out there that’s lost and dying. The message of faith is not just about how we can heap blessings on ourselves. Yes, God wants us blessed. But we are blessed to be a blessing!

We need to rise up in faith and boldly go forth with the gospel of the Lord Jesus to a lost and dying world. We cannot afford to draw back. Rather , we press in boldly and preach the gospel fearlessly, demonstrating the power of God to heal and deliver, and help reap the end-time harvest of souls into God’s family. Victory is ours as we press on in faith on the Word, experiencing all that’s ours in Christ and as we take the gospel to all the world, with signs following!
