My involvement in Rhema Nigeria has been life-transforming and I can boldly say it has affected every area of my life. My walk with God, family, ministry and finances have been totally overhauled. My wife and I had the privilege of being part of the first set of volunteers at Rhema Nigeria. In the course of volunteering, I saw firsthand what faith is and how to put it to work. Consequently, we started attending Rhema as the charter class entrants. In the course of attending Rhema, our second child, Melvin was born. Melvin was born with “ClubFoot” and the doctor clearly told us he needed to undergo a series of about 3 corrective surgeries. He, however, gave a caveat that irrespective of the surgeries, he couldn’t guarantee that the legs will ever be straight. Well, having heard the doctor’s report, my wife and I decided to go by the report of the Word of God in Psalm 138:8 “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me…..” We personalized a confession for our son based on this scripture and we just kept declaring “Melvin’s legs are perfectly straight, Melvin grows up strong and athletic, Melvin loves playing football!!!
Well, we kept declaring God’s word for about 11 months over our son and at a certain point, it was a settled issue in our hearts, irrespective of the fact that Melvin’s legs were still bent. Well, we began to see signs of the effect of our confession in little bits, first of all, Melvin fell in love with football as his best toy and he often just sits on the floor just hitting the ball around with his hands. One day, I was sitting in the living room watching television, when Melvin’s ball shot from the back and hit the screen. I turned back in anger to reprimand him when I was prompted to look at his legs, Melvin was standing and his feet were perfectly straight. Praise the Lord!!!! Till today, Melvin’s best toy is the football and yes, I see him playing for Real Madrid (it used to be Arsenal, but not sure we want Arsenal again. Lol)
Rhema indeed is a place where you are equipped for your life’s assignment. After we graduated from Rhema Bible Training Centre in 2014, we were led by God to pioneer a church in Abuja along with others and along the line, somewhere around July 2017, God began speaking to me about us stepping out to pioneer an independent Church in another part of Abuja. As at this time, from the natural side, things seemingly were not in place as it should be. I had stepped down from the pastoral position, I previously held and my wife had some challenges at her place of work resulting in her salary being slashed to N26,000 as her monthly take-home pay. I remember myself and my wife going to shop for Christmas, 2017, with N2,500. However, in the midst of this, we maintained our joy and NO-ONE knew of our peculiar situation. It was in the midst of this scenario, that God was telling me it was time for us to step out and pioneer the church.
I remember praying from September to December 2017, every day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for the resources to step out for the assignment. Interestingly, the more I prayed, the only word I kept hearing was “just step out and start”. I had made a very modest budget of about N6,000,000 as what I needed to start in view of the peculiarities of Abuja (being one of the most expensive cities in Africa). In the end, we set the 7th of January, 2018, as our kick-off date with the mindset that underneath us are the everlasting arms. A few days to the set day, my wife suddenly had an opportunity to supply bed-sheets in bulk and consequently made a profit of about N150,000. That was the beginning of a myriad of testimonies. The peculiar challenge of our assignment was that the clear instruction we received was to go start the church in another part of town (which was quite a distance from where we lived). So literally my wife and I “crossed the Jordan” alone with no support to start. We had to believe God for all forms of help and in the midst of all these, we saw God’s faithfulness.
I also remember Rev Tokunbo, our Director, telling us just two things: “pace yourself, don’t be in a hurry, ministry is a marathon and not a sprint” and “Keep at it, no matter what”. These two instructions kept us on our set part of destiny and though we had many challenges, on October 7th 2018, Newspring Christian Center was formally inaugurated by our pastor, Rev Tokunbo Adejuwon. We recently celebrated our 1st year anniversary and it’s been a journey of faith all through. In the course of this assignment, we have seen lives changed, bodies healed, souls saved and destinies aligned. Indeed it’s been worth every moment.
Rhema Bible Training Centre is not just a place where theories are taught. Indeed, we have come to realize that there is a “spirit of faith” that we caught in Rhema and it’s that spirit of faith that propels us to have absolute faith in the ability of God to take us through on our set path of destiny.
